Wildfire Management Strategies and Priorities Standard Operating Procedure: Priority of Values, features and areas where Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has been requested a wildfire response:1. Protection of human life.2. Protection of communities.3. Protection of major public infrastructure.4. Protection of high value commercial timber.(For purpose of this SOP, protection of human lives, communities, major public infrastructure and commercial timber is presumed to be the single largest strategy to mitigate the social impact of wildfire, including threat from flame and smoke.)5. Protection of remaining high values including structures and natural resources as determined by the Ministry utilizing values at risk versus cost suppression models. The decision to fight dire is at the discretion of the Ministry where operational flexibility is required due to: availability of equipment and resources, combined with the complexity of fire behaviour based on weather, fuels and topography.Priorities for these remaining values will be determined by first using the following principles for appropriate action responses and secondly by referring to the directives. |
